(2020/12/03 Written by Chien-hsun Lin, translated by Yolanda) At the community gathering on Dec. 3, 2020, WHC-USR invited long-term partners, Ven. Hour Sokrath (Founder of Green Umbrella, Cambodia) and Chair Nan-yu Cheng (Founder of Asanga International Aid) and Dr. Yen-ting Lin (Director of Asanga) for a talk on “International Services under the Pandemic: Opportunities in the Crisis.” The guests introduced the service sites in Cambodia and village lifestyles, and shared experiences of cross-national volunteering.

Through video-conferencing, Ven. Hour Sokrath described the vision of Green Umbrella and a brief history of the establishment of the organization and introduced his team members, especially Mr. Chhoy Samrath, who is in charge of the synchronous online English program in collaboration with Wenzao. He expressed gratitude to WHC-USR for the online lessons that allowed children in rural Cambodia to continue their learning of English and also appreciated the lively and practical approach adopted by Wenzao faculty and student volunteers, offering highly beneficial assistance to their faculty in terms of teaching methodology.

Founded in 2014, Asanga International Aid is currently the only Taiwanese organization stationed in rural Cambodia to promote healthcare education and fundamental work. In particular, Dr. Yen-ting Lin has stayed in Cambodia for service since 2016. The services aim at public health, especially nutrition improvement in the rural areas, featuring the training of local volunteers and fundamental staff from the public health sector, who are entitled for more involvement and leadership in the projects. The volunteering service not only results in the improved quality of public health service and the wellbeing of rural residents but also in the consolidation and sustainable development of the organization. At the lecture, Prof. Melody Liao of WHC-USR extended thanks to Asanga International Aid for their offer of help and support, which provided a link to international service site for our student volunteers.
