Full House for WHC-USR Service Learning! First Session of Cross-disciplinary Co-teaching
(20210303 written by Yolanda) After the first class of “deep-bowled course” International Service Learning and Leadership on Feb.24, our “micro course” Integrated Service-learning in Business Administration: Healthcare Marketing and Management also started the first class on March 3, 2021. Actually this was the first cross-disciplinary co-teaching of the semester. Students from the our classes gathered at Wenyuan Conference Room to listen to the lecture by Director Gung-su Lee of Social Work Office, Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital, Director Yi-feng Lin and Supervisor Jia-qi Lo of Social Work Section, E-Da Hospital, who took turns to introduce the hospital and voluntary work. Except for absence of a few students on official leave, the lecture hall was filled with over one hundred students kept in safe social distance. Five international students who are beginning learners of Mandarin were seated in the front rows with Ms. Yolanda Chi, whose interpreting helped them to seize the important messages in the lecture.
Director Lee briefly introduced the history and development of Siaogang Hospital and especially emphasized the mutual respect and understanding among medical personnel, volunteers and patients. A smile or a simple act of kindness from a volunteer could bring the greatest comfort to a patient and the greatest encouragement to the medical personnel. In addition, the involvement of volunteers had become an important index to the friendliness of a city. Supervisor Lo of E-Da Hospital, whose face we had been familiar with through the WHC-USR videos, appeared in person as an experienced volunteer to describe the tasks at the hospital. She was also a perfect example of developing a career from service learning. At the end of the co-teaching session, Prof. Melody Liao flipped the arrangement; the three guest speakers were awarded by our volunteers-to-be at the site. Afterwards, the students of the 4 classes were respectively led to different classrooms to continue their professional learning. As it was the first class meeting for the micro courses, both teachers and students wielded highly efficiency. Soon after the introduction to the course structure and content, students teamed up to prepare for volunteering and the semester-end reflection and sharing. Online teacher-student communication networks were also ready for close contact and follow-up to avoid feelings of remoteness and detachment due to the few class hours and in person meetings. In the excitement of meeting new partners, finding new goals, and experiencing new mode of learning, a busy but fruitful night for students ended under the sparkling light from the sky.
