A Final Celebration and Reflection of the After-school English Tutoring Project By Winnie Hsieh
A few days ago (110/6/2), 10 student volunteers from WHC-USR project met with students from Lide Middle School along with teachers (Professors Janet Weng, Peter Chou, Melody Liao of Wenzao; Principal Ruikai Hong and teacher WeiAn Ding of Lide Middle School; and Director Xiujuan Wu of the Winners Education Association) attended the online meeting to celebrate the end of the After-school English Tutoring Project and shared their thoughts about participating in this project.
The project started on March 31, 2021 when the volunteers, students and the staff from Winners Education Association met for the first time. It was also the beginning of the After-school English Tutoring Project. In addition to playing games and exchanging information with each other, they also enjoy the fun of making Mother's Day cards together. By mid-May, unfortunately, due to the raging epidemic, all the courses had to be changed to online teaching, but even so, the enthusiasm of each other could not be quenched. "As long as you hold on to the enthusiasm, you can make the world a better place" said Professor Janet Weng.
Then, several teachers shared their experience of this project. Professor Melody Liao said, "The key to the success of this class assistance is cooperation, and it requires enthusiasm from both sides to be able to learn eternally." Principal Ruikai Hong also added, "I have seen a different teaching method. What impressed me most was that there was a time when classes had to be suspended due to a period of examination. I was a little happy to see the children’s lost expressions, which means that they were very happy about learning from the Wenzao students and they have expectations about this class. "
The Wenzao student volunteers then shared their feelings. One student said, “Looking at the children who study hard is like projecting from their own experience, but now they are changing themselves as volunteers to tutor the children. I hope they can open their horizons and learn happily.” Another student said, “Our appearance is like planting a seed. One day, we will sprout and grow and become a special visitor in your life.”
For the Wenzao students who volunteered their professional services at Lide Midddle School, this project is not only about learning how to teach English, but learning through service. Only by maintaining enthusiasm can be enthusiastic and help those who really need help.
