Environmental and Air Pollution Education Seminar
By Winnie Hsieh and Peter Chou
On November 11, 2021, the "Environment and Air Pollution Education Seminar" was held in the first conference room on the fourth floor of Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital. The purpose of the seminar is to bring awareness to the problem of air pollution and discuss how to achieve improvements. In order to allow access to a greater audience, the meeting was also broadcasted live. Participants include Director Wenbin Xie of the Education Bureau, Professor Tailiang Chen, co-host of the Wenzao USR Project, President Xianglong Zhong of Taiping Elementary School, Deputy Dean of Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital Zhixing Hong, Director of the Department of Public Health at Kaohsiung Medical University, Peishi Chen, and Executive Director of the Environmental Medicine Research Center of Kaohsiung Medical University Mingcang Wu, Director, Deputy CEO of the Earth Citizen Foundation Minling Wang, Principal Jianmin Chen of Xiaogang High School, Director Sijia Chen of Siaogang Hospital, and many other officials and distinguished guests.
In recent years, the problem of environmental air pollution has become increasingly serious. The smog when we out of the window, the respiratory diseases that people developed, and even the abnormal climate of the earth, are inseparable from "air pollution." To truly and fundamentally improve the air pollution problem, we must start with air pollution education and integrate it with the children’s curriculum. After all, it is the responsibility of everyone to protect the environment.
This conference is divided into three sessions. First, Xianglong Zhong, the principal of Taiping Elementary School, gave a lecture on "The Air Pollution Education Crisis and Resolution - Taiping Elementary School’s Air Pollution Curriculum Design Experience Sharing". Principal Zhong, who has lived in Kaohsiung since he was a child, has a very deep feeling about air pollution and understands the impact of it. In his speech, Principal Zhong mentioned about the severe haze he sees on his way to work, the drought in Chengcheng Lake and the Mingba Kelu Bridge in Kaohsiung’s Taoyuan District, which was damaged by turbulent water a while ago. These phenomena are not only caused by global warming and extreme weather, but they are also warning signs that the environment has given people. During this time, should we stop and just look at the damages? We must take actions to bring improvement: "We are no longer outsiders."
Principal Zhong also believes that learning will be more interesting if technology can be used in air pollution education courses. Therefore, he developed the "Surface Haze" app to allow children to learn more vividly. When integrating AR and VR to facilitate teaching, cross-domain alliances and division of labor must be used in order to achieve good results. For example, Taiping Elementary School compiles the themes of the courses, Sun Yat-sen University designs props, and Siaogang Hospital carries out the plan. In short, we should turn "ideas" into "practices," and turn these crises into opportunities.
Next, Peishi Chen, the director of the Department of Public Health at Kaohsiung Medical University, give a lecture on "Interdisciplinary Learning Planning for Air Pollution and Health in High-tech Medicine". Director Chen started conducting research on environmental air pollution ten years ago and found that the urban air pollution problem urgently needs to be improved. Recently, Kaohsiung Medical University has promoted the cross-domain innovative "Air Pollution and Health Micro-Learning Program", which focuses on social education and social feedback. The program not only includes classroom instruction, it also involves taking students to residents’ homes for air quality measurement, and guides students to obtain licenses. The purpose is to let students understand the issues of air pollution and health. After they have learned the relevant knowledge, it is hoped that they would change their attitudes and behaviors, apply them in their daily life, and give back to their community. The teachers also encourage students to take the "Occupational Health Management Micro Course" where students can obtain professional licenses, but also participate in a series of activities focusing on "Cultivating Health Promotion on Campus". These include Kaohsiung Medical Hospital’s "Asthma Camp" and "Abandoning Asthma Campaign" organized by doctor who actively carry out campus health education. The original intention of these courses is to hope that more people can pay attention to this topic.
The last presentation was "Life Proposal for Air Pollution Education" presented by Deputy Chief Executive Minling Wang of the Earth Citizen Foundation. The "Earth Citizen Foundation" was established 14 years ago and is a non-profit NGO based on environmental groups. In the past few years, many activities have been launched, such as: 1) Houjing Junior High School Education Camp which focuses on environmental knowledge. This course takes students to various sites to learn about soil pollution and its impact on the environment. 2) Going to local markets to arouse the public's environmental awareness and advocate the reform of the PSI air pollution indicator. 3. Organize environmental art exhibitions. For example, in Kaohsiung, you can see a container home, linking the relationship between consumption and industrial production. By reflecting on modern civilization, we can encourage changes in consumption habits. Everyone could make a small effort starting from their own. By continuing to promote simple life and environmental education, we can transform from an industrial economy to a green economy.
In addition to the coronavirus, air pollution can be said to be the second most important issue of concern. Whether it is fine suspended particles in the air or pollution from industries, they cause a great burden on the body. The earth can satisfy human needs, but it cannot satisfy human greed. Unconsciously, people are actually using selfishness and greed to bury the happiness of our next generation. In the future, we should advocate "Improving environmental air pollution, starting from you and me!"
