Teacher’s Community: S.D.S. Academy and Snail Mom’s Story

By Winnie Hsieh (edited by Peter Chou)

Recently (110/12/24 from 12:00 noon to 14:00 p.m. at 12/F, Zhishan Building), WZU-WHC invited the Director Chan of 善導書院 (S.D.S. Academy) to the teachers' community to share her ideas and thoughts on the creation of the S.D.S. Academy and the Happy Cafeteria to inspire new ideas on the future of USR.

S.D.S. has been established for 24 years, specializing in the care of local children, the elderly and unemployed women. It was founded by the director's personal hard work and experience to help and lead a group of single mothers, and has successfully transformed many unruly children by teaching them in a child-friendly way. These children have become the core of the S.D.S. Academy, and in 1997, the S.D.S. Academy was registered as a public service organization.

The director began by sharing her personal family background to explain the causes and plight of social problems. For example, domestic violence, single motherhood, child support, lack of employment skills, intergenerational parenting, middle-aged unemployment, etc. are all everyday problems of the lower strata of society. In spite of this, the residents still insisted on not receiving social security benefits, fearing that they would become "habitual" and would have no motivation to get rid of their fate, so they actively sought to become self-sufficient.

The director also cited some children as examples: living in a dilapidated environment, being abused for a long time, living under distorted values, all these difficult experiences are not something that ordinary people can experience. In some cases, children who are not yet in school are faced with loss of parents, domestic violence, sexual abuse, drug abuse by elders, crime, dementia or severe mental disorders. In these cases, the institution takes turns to take care of them instead of their families, assisting them in medical treatment and schooling, guiding them back to the warmth of their families and reducing the chance of going astray.

S.D.S. Academy actively provides a wide range of education for the children, such as remedial teaching, character education, life education, agricultural education, family and life education and community service. The first thing the children do when they enter the academy is to learn to cook, to be independent, and to be responsible for themselves. In the academy, children learn to recite the Discipleship Rules and to pray for thanks before meals. They learn to thank their parents for raising them, their teachers for teaching them, and those who have helped them.

The dean was worried about what would happen to S.D.S. Academy twenty years later, especially after she was gone. The purpose is to make everyone in that space feel that the "present moment" is the moment of happiness. The children are also taught to grow rice, taro, tomatoes and cucumbers with their own hands, so that they can feel that it is not easy to grow and that every grain is hard work, so they cannot waste food. In addition, the school must also keep up with the changes of the times and give full play to creativity. For example, growing pineapples and producing pineapple products such as pineapple cakes, dried pineapples, pineapple soy sauce, pineapple enzyme, pineapple bean paste, etc. to create economic value for self-reliance. All products are made without any chemical additives and have a guaranteed return mechanism. In addition to building brand identity and reputation, the aim is to teach children to face the land and themselves with honesty.

In addition to teaching the children moral and academic subjects, she also encourages them to participate in more activities such as climbing up the mountain. In recent years, the divorce rate is increasing and the phenomenon of single-parent families is worsening. These “Snail Moms” hopes that more groups and organizations will cooperate to help these uncared children build a warm family of their own. Thanks to the story of "Snail Moms", Wenzao USR has seen the different future needs and challenges.

S.D.S Academy is our new field partner for this semester. Students from WZU-WHC teach English remotely to children at the academy every Saturday morning in hopes of boosting their enthusiasm for learning.
