Team Building Camp in Baoshan: Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom; so is the USR Team.

(By Yolanda Ji; translated by Peter Chou)

(2022 Kaohsiung) After the final exams were over, the team teachers were finally able to put aside their teaching load for a while and go to Baoshan for a two-day team building camp to review the year's achievements and plan future development in the quiet environment surrounded by mountains and cherry blossoms. The USR program's strength is the ability to grow and sustain the program. This time, we invited Professor Samuel Ku and Professor Peter Chen, who were once a member of the core team, to deepen the exchange between the old and the new members and to pass on the mission.

Under the warm invitation and arrangement of Professor Yi-Feng Tsai, a total of 12 members (Professor Yi-Feng Tsai, Professor Samuel Ku, Professor Peter Chen, Professor Melody Liao, Professor Janet Weng, Professor Elodie Hsu, Professor Peter Chou, Professor Jianxun Lin, Professor Jingsu Lin, Teacher Yolanda Ji, and assistants Jollis Lin and Amos Li). The members drove four cars from Wenzao at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and traveled long distances, and arrived at Baozhujie B&B in Baoshan at noon, which is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. After enjoying a sumptuous and delicious lunch, the teachers rested in the four bedrooms, as if returning to the simple and dedicated service in the university days. After a short rest, the first activity began. Professor Tsai served as a guide. We hiked through the forest and on the way, the teachers talked freely, shouted to relieve stress, and learned about the plants in the mountains. Although the steep mountain road is difficult to travel, the scenery is breath-taking. All the teachers are all rosy and cheerful, which is similar to the sea of pink flowers at the Sakura Park!

In the evening, the team moved to the camping area in a tea plantation for the second activity, where the sunset, the mountain mist, and the cool breeze made everyone forget about their troubles and the songs prepared by Professor Chen touched the teachers' hearts. The dinner was filled with famous dishes from the tea garden which warmed everyone's stomach. During the meal, visitors from the tea garden joined the fun and invited the team to visit the next day.

After going back to the B&B, Professor Ku began a fun game to test the familiarity of the team members with each other. Questions were asked by Professor Ku, and each person wrote down the answer anonymously, and then everyone had to guess who wrote it. It was noted that the team teachers have a high degree of tacit understanding, with as many as 60% to 70% correct, and of course the ones who know each teacher the best were the assistants Jollis and Amos.

The day's exhaustion ended in a loud snore. The next morning, when we woke up, a warm breakfast was waiting for us. Before leaving, the team went to a friend they met the day before for a cup of tea and coffee, and then went to the tribal Presbyterian Church for worship. Although the teachers of the team were of different religions, including Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, etc., they kept their reverence and gratitude and integrated with the local people, especially singing hymns and reading the Bible in the Bunun language, which was a unique experience. Professor Liao took this opportunity to introduce the team and the work of USR, and welcomed the young tribal students to join Wenzao. In addition, Professor Lin, who attended a church service for the first time, played a flute and presented a song called "The Road to the Cross", which was a beautiful and moving piece that soothed the loneliness of the tribesmen and women in the remote village.

Next, the morning's activity was a trip to the top of the mountain to sample the rare Taiwanese coffee, view the beautiful mountain forest, enjoy the flowers and fruits, and watch the clouds and birds. On the way back, Professor Chou, who is always kind, also played a trick to return the playfulness of other teachers the night before, and brought us closer to each other. The two-day and one-night team camp ended successfully after lunch, and the team was filled with spiritual satisfaction. We were sad to say goodbye to this warm and unique homeland, and returned to the city at 5pm to resume our work. We hope the epidemic will end soon and the USR team will be able to visit this beautiful mountainous area again.
