(International Webinar) (Written by melody, translated by Lanis and Yolanda)
A dream to bring smiles on kids’ faces again--Delivering love to Vietnam (International Webinar) Wenzao Healthcare Communication—University Social Responsibility (WHC-USR) was invited to visit Vietnam in September 2019 in the company of the partners of the E-Da Hospital’s international medical team, a great chance to witness how Operating Smile, a world-class non-profit organization, led a group of professional international volunteers to demonstrate versatility in leadership and executive power while engaging in cleft lip and palate surgery.
Although medical care is not Wenzao’s specialty, our ability in English and Vietnamese communication is able to help out in the situation, with “non-medical volunteers” playing an indispensable role in the whole medical care team. Therefore, ever since our return to Taiwan, we have been thinking and planning for international service learning project, in the hope that our students will be able to cross the borders and disciplines to join global organizations and deliver love from Taiwan to Vietnam. We look forward to seeing the smiles of the lip-cleft Vietnamese children from economically disadvantaged families, who will regain confidence and pursue their life goals.
As a lot of the normal practice has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we owe our special thanks to Vice Superintendent Seng-Feng Jeng of E-DA Hospital (who has devoted himself to OSV service since 2002) for convening a webinar on the theme international innovative cooperation in the post COVID-19 era and for inviting members of WHC-USR for a reunion with Operation Smile Vietnam. Not only did Chief Representative Mr. Viet P. Nguyenru from Vietnam share Operation Smile Vietnam’s Covid-19 strategies, but also Vice Superintendent Seng-Feng Jeng and Dean Taichi Wu of Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs, I-Shou University offered possible directions for future cooperation. WHC-USR Principal Investigator, Prof. Melody Liao, who also shared her experience and observation as a participant in the touring charity treatment in Vietnam, proposed that medical treatment and hygiene education could be conducted on two tracks at the same time, especially in the case of the dental team, where hygiene education camps could be simultaneously held in the same elementary schools of the rural areas.
With unreserved guidance and help from Dr. Seng-Feng Jeng, who has dedicated himself to charity medical treatment for over 18 years in Vietnam, we envision the transformation of WHC-USR into a cross-national and cross-disciplinary collaboration platform, allowing more students to participate in professional service learning in Vietnam and broaden their horizons through international volunteering, which would contribute to their leadership on the international stage.
