12/24 WHC-USR Teachers’ Community: The Sundoor School--The Story of Mother Snail

How far are we from other people? One meter? Or 10 kilometers? Or the distance from the Earth to the Moon? In most cases, measuring the distance is meaningless. The significant measurement in life is actually that of love and care, which determines our distance. If we care about each other, then a thousand miles does not matter at all. Yet, without love and care, a distance, though short as only one yard away, would still seem remote as the distance to the world’s end. Once upon a time, there was a mother in the status of a single-parent, who raised her children all by herself. Out of empathy for women in a tough situation similar to hers, she launched a mode of education, namely to “exchange children with others for teaching purposes”; as a result, love and care have melted the freezing distance between people, turning a remote rural area into a heart-warming paradise. This is the origin of the Sundoor School.

When Dean Wen-ching Chen of the Sundoor School first came to Gaushu Township to assist in a relief operation after Typhoon Morakot in 2009, she found the problems in the rural areas to be so severe that she determined to stay and indulge in solving the problems. Twenty-four years has passed since her earliest attempt and Dean Chen has accompanied numerous children in their growth. Frequented by hardship throughout the process, she has never given up any of the children. Dean Chen often calls herself “Mother Snail”, in the image of a mother carrying those kids on her back and crawling slowing forward. She expects every child to learn professional skills to flip into success and to help more people in need with their acquired strengths.

For our Teachers’ Community gathering on Dec. 24, we have invited Dean Wen-ching Chen to share the story of Mother Snail, showing the struggles and footsteps of the Sundoor School. The physical distance between people is never a problem, and mutual care blossoms into possibilities for Sundoor. You are welcome to join us and let’s give a bid hand to Mother Snail.
