3/27 E-Da new volunteer training is in full swing (Written by Sandy Huang/ Peter Chou)

Students of Wenzao USR WHC arrived in E-Da Hospital on 3/27 for their new volunteers training. When the students arrived, they were guided to the lecture hall on the sixth floor by volunteers in the hospital wearing green vests. In addition to Wenzao students, there were also students from I-Shou University as well as members of the community participating in the training session, totaling 74 participants in all.

E-Da Hospital is a premier hospital in southern Taiwan, and it is also a hospital that has passed international medical certification. E-Da Hospital features a combination of sightseeing, shopping, tourism, and medical care. It not only provides patients with high-quality medical services, but also brings relieving entertainment for the patients and their families. The purpose of the establishment of E-Da Hospital is closely related to the beliefs of USR, to give back to the society and promoting the health of the people. For example, when Penghu (one of Taiwan’s outlying islands) was facing a shortage of doctors, E-Da Hospital moved in to support the area, benefiting thousands of people, and the residents are deeply moved.

At the beginning of the training course, professional nurses gave an overview. We were introduced the medical offices, the nursing department, the emergency department, tranquility care, organ donation, just to name a few. The students also had the chance to demonstrate pushing wheelchairs and using fire extinguishers, leaving a deep impression. It is hoped that through the training course, Wenzao students will have a better understanding of the content of volunteer services and the importance of having the right mentality when serving others.

In addition to studying, the staff also carefully arranged hospital tours, hoping to familiarize the students with the environment of the E-Da Hospital. This help the volunteers to grasp their responsibilities more quickly. Volunteers in the hospital also shared their experience of volunteering in the hospital. When asked about their motivations for volunteering, the students provided many interesting answers such as wanting to help others without asking for anything in return, dedication, active learning, and more.

Teachers of Wenzao USR WHC were also present to give support to the students, including Teacher Melody, Elodie, Yufita, and Yolanda. The teachers also provided the students with drinks, a sumptuous lunch and snacks for their efforts of becoming a part of Wenzao’s USR WHC and giving back to the society. Teaching assistants Jollis and Amos were also on hand to help everyone successfully complete training.

E-Da Hospital is also grateful to the Wenzao students for their willingness to spare their free time to promote health services in the community by volunteering. At the end of the course, nurse Xiaorou Wu taught us that we should have etiquette, tone, manners, and the right mentality in the process of volunteering. She introduced the honor card for volunteer service and told the audience: "Maybe a person has limited abilities, but a group of people has unlimited power”. She also hopes that Wenzao students will be able to understand themselves and pursue growth through service.
